MVSNA Goals for 2007

In addition to being joined by Mayor Fenty, at our Tuesday meeting we will consider adoption of goals for the Association for 2007.  Here is a link to the draft goal statement that will be presented to the membership: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dd43xvtr_8qv4wsp. It is based on discussions of the new officers at our annual retreat.  Please share your thoughts and ideas, particularly if you cannot attend the meeting.  And, if you are interested in volunteering to help us achieve our goals, we really need your help!

Note that some of the proposed goals represent substantial changes in the organization -- including incorporating, obtaining 501(c) status, expanding our boundaries to include Mt. Vernon Triangle, adopting new bylaws (required with incorporating) that include a larger board of directors, etc.  None of this is set in stone and depends on your feedback.

Looks like Si caught the spirit of the Blagden Alley gang. Good move to become a legal entity to raise your visibility in the eyes of the pols. I suspect the Gallery Place folks will put up a stink as they too claim the triangle in their successionist move to break away from 2C and join with Penn Quarter. Since I study territorial disputes professionally, I will enjoy seeing the feathers fly. You have a real case of what the lawyers call Terra Nullis -- previously unclaimed lands. Recommend you put a note in a bottle claiming the territory for Mount Vernon Square and claim the site under the Guano Act of 1856.

Ray -- According to this report (http://lifein.mountvernonsquare.org/index.cfm/2007/3/15/ANC-6C-Updates), the potential new Downtown Neighborhood Association does not include Mt Vernon Triangle.

Ray that Blagden meeting was way fun & they very graciously do not mind any potential overlap with MVSNA - they technically go to 7th. We very much appreciated their advice.

Sam is correct, Downtown NA is going up to Mass on our end so there will be a whole lot of new residents in the triangle who may benefit by participation in MVSNA. But even if they do claim the triangle the more the merrier. Part of MVSNA is currently served by Truxton as well. Also almost the entire Mt. Vernon Triangle is in ANC 6C.

It would be very nice if neighbors could deduct their MVSNA contributions. We have a lot of great people who step up in times of need. (info magnets, collapsed house, etc...)

since you've studied territorial disputes do you recall the episode of The Big Valley when Constance Barkley(miss barbara stanwyck) said to her territorial rival, "Bitch, get off my land!"

our SMD during the 90's extended on 4th street beyond mass ave. and continued until G street. so there is a historical relationship with that area which is now called the triangle.

Calm down, guys. I was not mocking you, folks. You have my profound respect. Really! It is great to see the cross fertilization with the venerable Blagden Alley denizens. But I am confident we will lose the Mass-NY-NJ avenue triangle after the 2010 census redistricting. Gallery Place wants out of our dysfunctional ghetto ANC big time as they hobnob more with Penn Quarter than with slum dwellers up north. They are focused on loud tacky bridge and tunnel crowds who patronize the bars on the street level, while we struggle with vicious gun violence and random muggings. Ward 2 realigned drastically after the last census and a large portion of it was allocated to Ward 6, just to get it out of Third World ANC 2C. The Gallery Placers are waking up politically and are lining up to cast off Doris' 2C fiefdom with its suburbanite churches, remnant slums, plucky gentrifiers and their dogs, and Richard's beloved shelters.

Ray -- Where do you live?

I think there is a good chance that this entire area including all of ANC 2C will end up in Ward 5 or 6 after the next census. There has been considerable growth in Ward 2 during this century.

ray, to say that i'm opposed to shelters is too broad of a brush. what i do oppose is the government deciding what we should have and deliver it without consultation, notice or warning. the trailers at 4th and L is just the latest instance. we had the trailers at 7th and new york for 10 years before that and the were sponsored by nations bank.
the mckenna wagon at 5th and L has been going on for over 10 years too. at one time it was a mens only feeding station becuase it was thought too dangerous for women and children to spocialize with these clients but it's fine and dandy to let the people who live here be terrorized and have their property vandalized.

cross fertilization, i love it! cant wait to garden :)
this forum makes it hard to convey tone but I have nothing but love, whatever ward we all end up in!
