301 NEW YORK AVENUE

upon returning from lunch today at the Holy Redeemer Convent with the sisters, yes i know spiritual sisters,  i crossed new york avenue and infront of 301.  god, that building is a mess.  do people live upstairs?  didn't they have a fire not long ago.  then they have this banner sign which states "will build to suit tenant"  isnt that zoned historic?  and what about the used car lot from hell next door to it?  i know, i know it's ward 6.

does anybody know the name of the person responsible for chopping up our neighborhoods into different ANC"s.  Phil Mendelson says it was somebody local who's connected to the Ward Two dems.

Tell me about it. I walk pass both properties every day. Neither owner cares to maintain the properties. I have been in contact with Public Space over at DDOT regarding the illegal billboards the car lot has staged all over the property. I really dislike the one displaying movie and album releases. I worked with Public Space about 6 mos. ago to have the same billboard removed. Now another one is back up. Supposedly they were issued fines. Who knows if that ever materialized because they couldnt find an appropriate address for the owner.

Since we are on the topic of that block..what about the huge section of tree that fell (just above NY on 3rd St) the other night. The tree, which is large, is completely dead and every so often a large section will fall off. Luckily it was late when this piece fell because it surely was capable of crushing a car or cars. Rumor is a few years ago a crazy man with an ax tried chopping the tree down (u can see the marks). Now that would have been interesting because it is large and very close to NY Ave. It wasnt long before the cops arrived. Not sure what happened to the ax man, but weve got a large dead tree now. It was a perfectly healthy tree. Ill put in a service request.

That block is a disaster and has been for years. I'm not sure who owns the property the car lot sits on, but they have never maintained it and constantly have trash strewn everywhere. All of the signs that they have posted are illegal and outside of their property line & they sometimes park cars on public space as well (including on the sidewalk of 4th St.). The lot and its weeds have grown over time and apprear to be eating up the sidewalk. I believe that the city cleans it incrementally and sends notices to the owner, but I am not sure if the related liens have been applied, since, as John commented above, DC has recognized that the site is a problem and does physically exist, but they cannot seem to find the address in the records (even theough the address is posted on the sign). This may mean that the business is operating without a permit or license, since it is DCRA that was unable to find the property in its database.

The sign shop burned down several months ago and I'm afraid that it may sit that way indefinitely, as no work has been done on the building since.
